Self Management

You are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Learn to accept total responsibility for yourself. If you do not manage yourself, then you are letting others have control of your Life. These tips will help "you" manage "you."

Here is a list of things that help you in self management and which will in turn lead you to the path of success: -

-) Look at every new opportunity as an exciting and new-life experience.

-) Be a professional who exhibits self-confidence and self-assurance in your potential to complete any task.

-) Agree with yourself in advance that you will have a good attitude toward the upcoming task.

-) Frequently ask, "Is what I am doing right now moving me toward my goals?"

-) Do it right the first time and you will not have to take time later to fix it.

-) Accept responsibility for your job successes and failures. Do not look for a scapegoat.

-) Do not view things you do as a "job." View all activities as a challenge.

-) Use your subconscious mind by telling it to do what you do want. Instead of telling yourself, "I can't do that very well," say, "I can do this very well."-) Give yourself points for completing tasks on your "to-do" list in priority order. When you reach 10 points, reward yourself.

-) Practice your personal beliefs. It may be helpful each morning to take 15 minutes to gather your thoughts and say a prayer.

-) Make a commitment to show someone a specific accomplishment on a certain date. The added urgency will help you feel motivated to have it done.

-) Practice self-determination, wanting to do it for yourself.

-) Believe that you can be what you want to be.

-) Never criticize yourself as having a weakness. There is no such thing. You are only talking about a present undeveloped skill or part of yourself that if you so chose, you can change. You do not have any weakness, only untapped potential.

-) Be pleasant all the time-no matter what the situation.

-) Challenge yourself to do things differently than you have in the past. It provides new ideas and keeps you interested.

-) Talk to yourself. A self-talk using positive affirmation is something that is common among all great achievers. They convince themselves that they can accomplish their goals.

-) Create your own "motivation board" by putting up notes of things you need to do on a bulletin board or special wall space. It is an easily visible way to see what you need to work on. When an item is done, remove the note. Also keep your goals listed and pictured on your board.

-) Stay interested in what you are doing. Keep looking for what is interesting in your work. Change your perspective and look at it as someone outside your job would,

-) Establish personal incentives and rewards to help maintain your own high enthusiasm and performance level.

The Benefits of Cupping

The Benefits of Cupping

January 14, 2008 By MyUmmah Editor

What is cupping?
Cupping is a method of treatment in which a jar is attached to the skin surface to cause local congestion through the negative pressure created. An incision lightly made to allow the congested blood to ooze out. This type of treatment has been practiced by the Chinese and the Arabs for thousands of years. Cupping is a therapeutic process of removing this unclean blood from the body. It is a form of medical treatment which has been recommended by Shari’ah. In Malay this practice is known as ‘BEKAM’ and in Arabic it is called ‘AL-HIJAMAH’ while in China ‘gua-sha’. In Arabic this method of therapy was popularized by our Prophet Muhammad (sallallhu alaiyhi wassallam) as stated in many Hadith.

Indication and Diseases that respond to Cupping:
The cupping method has the function of warming and promoting the flow of energy in the blood thus dispelling cold, dampness, toxins and winds. It also diminishes swellings and pains.

The following problems respond very well to Cupping:-
Disease caused by dampness, such as low back pain, lumbago, sciatica, pain in the arms and shoulders, pain in the legs and muscular parts of the body, stomachache, vomiting, headache, migraine, sprains, insomnia, etc.

Few Hadith about Cupping:

Ibn Abbas (R.A.) reported Allah’s messenger (sallallhu alaiyhi wassallam) as saying” There is a remedy in three thing: The Incision of a cupping glass, a drink of honey, or cauterization by fire, but I forbid my people to cauterize.”

During the battle of Khaibar in 7 A.H. with the Jews, a Jewish woman prepared some meat which she filled with deadly poison and presented to Rasullulah(sallallhu alaiyhi wassallam). Upon tasting the meat, the poison affected Rasulallah (sallallhu alaiyhi wassallam). Rasulallah (sallallhu alaiyhi wassallam) then used to undergo cupping in order to relieve himself from effects of the poison in his blood ( Shamaail Tirmizi )

Rasullullah (sallallhu alaiyhi wassallam) was once hurt on his leg, hence (probably due to the clogging of the blood), he underwent cupping on his leg. (Mishkat p. 389)

Rasulallah (Sallallhu alaiyhi Wassallam) said, ‘Jibraaeel (alayhis salaam) repeatedly emphasised upon me to resort to cupping to the extent that I feared that cupping will be made compulsory.’ (Jamal Wasaail p. 179).

Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallaahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, ‘The best medicine is cupping.’ (Shamaail, chapter of Cupping)

Hadhrat Abu Kabsha (Radhiallaahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) used to undergo cupping on the head and between his shoulders and he used to say, ‘Whosoever removes this blood, it will not harm him that he does not take any other medical treatment.’ (Mishkat p. 389)

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) praised a person who performs cupping, saying it removes blood, lightens the back and sharpens the eyesight (Jamal Wasaail p. 179) The above quoted Ahaadith are clear that cupping was practiced by Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) himself and strongly recommended by him.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) has also given some guidelines regarding cupping. Once he came across a fasting person who underwent cupping and became weak. Hence, he said, ‘The person who underwent cupping broke his fast.’ (Jam?l Wasaail p. 179) Mullah Ali Qari (Rahmatullaahi alayhi) while explaining the Hadith states that since a person is already weak by fasting, undergoing cupping weakens him further. Thus such a person due to feeling extremely weak may be forced to break his fast.

He further states that in the light of the principle understood from the Hadith, cupping should not be administered immediately after having a hot bath, or while the belly is full.

Time of Cupping:

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallaahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) said: ‘One should not undergo cupping during the 13, 14 and 15 of the lunar month.’ Some Muhadditheen explain that on those days the full moon has a gravitational impact on many things on earth. For example, the sea has high tides due to the full moon. Similarly, the flowing of the blood is also affected and flows faster during the full moon. One may loose much blood in these days if one undergoes cupping.
Therefore, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) advised that one should undergo cupping on the 17, 19 and 21 of the lunar month. (Mishkat p. 389). Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) advised that cupping should not be done on a Tuesday, since there is a certain time on a Tuesday that flowing blood does not stop. (Mishkat p. 389). Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) also advised that cupping should not be done on Saturdays and Wednesdays as this could lead to leprosy. (Mishkat p. 389). As the need may arise, cupping may be performed at any time according to the condition or urgency.

Cupping Techniques:
There are various types of cups – rubber, bamboo, glass and plastic, animal horns, etc. and also the technique of cupping varies from place to place or form country to country.

Among the Kelantanese Malays, they used buffalo horns, drinking glasses and bamboo as cups. It is said that the ancient Chinese and Arabs had used animal horns for cupping.

Cupping Techniques Today:
Today, there are various types of cups to choose for cupping such as rubber cups, bamboos, cupping glasses or plastic cups.

There are two types of cupping more prevalent today:

Traditional Cupping and

Vacuum Cupping

Traditional Cupping are the one that need some kind of fire to create a vacuum, while the vacuum cups (a newer type) have a pump so that no fire is needed.

The scholars advise that administering medicine requires medical expertise. Therefore, with regard to any medical treatment recommended by Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam), due to health and medical intricacies, one must exercise caution and consult with a physician. Similarly, with regard to cupping, although it is strongly recommended by Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam), one must consult with a medical practitioner before undergoing cupping.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) himself underwent cupping many times and encouraged others to do so too. May we revive this Sunnah and benefit from its therapeutic effects

RAMADAN 10: DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF BIBI KHADIJA ؑ

RAMADAN 10:
DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF BIBI KHADIJA ؑ

Sayyeda Khadija ؑ was born in the year 555 AD in Makkah. Her father Hazrat Khuwalid ibn Asad ؓ from the Bani Asad clan of the Quraish tribe was a successful merchant and businessman of Makkah, while her mother Bibi Fatimah bint Zidah hailed from the Bani Hashim clan of the Quraish tribe. Her ancestry to Prophet Abraham ؑ could hence be traced both through her paternal as well as maternal sides. She had three siblings; two brothers Hizam ؓ and Awwam ؓ, and a sister Halah ؓ. As Bibi Khadija ؑ grew older, she began to take interest in her father’s trading business and earned herself quite a name.

Bibi Khadija’s ؑ mother passed away in the year 675 AD, and ten years later her father passed away too. Bibi Khadija ؑ was now thirty years old and successfully carrying forward her father’s business. It was a well known fact that the size of Bibi Khadija’s ؑ trade caravan equaled that of all the other Makkan trade caravans. Her success as a businesswoman attracted many noble and wealthy Arabs to ask her hand in marriage but she declined all offers. Despite her immense wealth, Bibi Khadija ؑ should great modesty and generosity. Several impoverished households in Makkah were financed through Bibi Khadija’s ؑ money.

It was some time in the year 595 AD, that she hired a trusted merchant, Abu Talib ؑ to head her trade caravan to Syria. Her real motive to hire Hazrat Abu Talib ؑ was to know more about his orphaned nephew Hazrat Muhammad bin Abdullah ؑ, who had already earned the titles of As-Sadiq (truthful) and Al-Amin (trustworthy). She also send her servant Maysara along with the caravan to keep an eye on Hazrat Muhammad bin Abdullah ؑ. Aged 25, Hazrat Muhammad ؑ did not have much experience of trading, but skillfully and honestly earned a large profit for Bibi Khadija ؑ. Moreover, Maysara witnessed certain paranormal events occurring around Hazrat Muhammad ؑ, of which he told his mistress. So moved was Bibi Khadija ؑ by Hazrat Muhammad’s ؑ fair conduct that she approached Hazrat Abu Talib ؑ with a marriage proposal to his nephew. Hazrat Muhammad ؑ accepted the proposal, knowing that Bibi Khadija ؑ was in fact a widow. The marriage was presided over by Hazrat Abu Talib ؑ. After marriage, Bibi Khadija ؑ moved in with Hazrat Muhammad ؑ and the happily-married couple started together a new begging. Their house was soon blessed with the birth of Hazrat Qasim ؑ, their first child. However, he died at a very young age. Sayyeda Khadija ؑ gave birth to two other more boys, Hazrat Abdullah ؑ and Hazrat Ibrahim ؑ, but they too passed away young. Among daughters, Bibi Khadija ؑ gave birth to Bibi Zaynab ؑ, Bibi Ruqayya ؑ, Bibi Umm Kulsum ؑ and Bibi Fatimah ؑ. Their last child, Bibi Fatimah was the favorite of Hazrat Muhammad ؑ, the reasons for which he would soon find out!

The couple were in their fifteenth year of marriage in 610 AD, when an event occurred that would forever alter their destinies. Hazrat Muhammad ؑ had begun to feel tired and bothered by all the rampant bloodshed and corruption of Makkah. He would often leave his family and go off to the hills to mediate. On one such occasion, Hazrat Muhammad ؑ came running back home, shivering violently and drenched in cold sweat. He wore a petrified expression on his face and immediate asked his wife to put him in his room and cover him with blankets. Horrified at her beloved husband’s disoriented behavior, she persuaded him to tell her the reason. He answered to her that he had been meditating in a cave when out of nowhere an angel like figured appeared before him claiming to be Gabriel ؑ, who declared him a prophet. Shocked by what she had heard, Bibi Khadija ؑ at once contacted her learned cousin Waraqah. He heard all that had happened and exclaimed that Bibi Khadija’s ؑ husband, Muhammad bin Abdullah ؑ, was in fact Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ,the last prophet to be send by God, whose coming was foretold in the Hebrew scriptures. This explained all the weird happening that Bibi Khadija’s ؑ servant had noticed when he had accompanied Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Syria. Bibi Khadija ؑ comforted her husband and told him all that Waraqah had said. She solemnly testified the Oneness of ALLAH and the prophet –hood of Rasoolallah ﷺ, thus becoming the first ever believer.
As Rasoolallah ﷺ embarked on his mission to eradicate falsehood and spread the word of ALLAH, he faced stiff opposition from the people of Makkah, specially from the nobility, who saw Rasoolallah ﷺ as a threat to their wealth and leisure. Bibi Khadija ﷺ patiently bore all the taunts and insults that were flung at her family. Not once did she waver in the commitment that she made to Rasoolallah ﷺ. In the year 617 AD, the chiefs of Makkah declared a boycott of the muslims. Bibi Khadija ؑ gave away all her wealth in the cause of Islam by providing for food and shelter for the ousted muslims. The boycott lasted for two years, when it eventually failed to prevent the growth of Islam.

By the year 619 AD, Bibi Khadija ؑ had reached sixty-four. Her health began to deteriorate and she fell ill. After sharing the companionship of Rasoolallah ﷺ for twenty-four years, Bibi Khadija ؑ passed away on the 10th day of Ramadan, in 619 AD. That same year, Rasoolallah ﷺ also lost another of his relative, his beloved uncle Sayyedna Abu Talib ؑ. The Holy Prophet ﷺ was so depressed by the loss of his two dearest relatives that the year 619 AD came to be known as the Year of Sorrows. Both these great personalities were laid to rest in Makkah’s Al-Mualla Graveyard.

Rasoolallah ﷺ dearly loved Bibi Khadija ؑ., and would often speak of her long after she was gone, to Bibi Ayesha ؓ and his other wives. He placed her in the ranks of the four greatest women of all times, the other three being Bibi Aasiya ؑ (wife of Pharaoh), Bibi Mayram ؑ, (the Virgin Mary), and Bibi Sayyeda Fatimah Zehra ؑ. (daughter of Bibi Khadija and Rasoolallah). While none of Bibi Khadija’s ؑ sons survived beyond childhood, her three daughters did grow to adulthood. Bibi Ruqayya ؑ and Bibi Umm Kulsum ؑ married the great companion and future Caliph, Uthman bin Affan ؓ. However, both of them passed away before giving birth. It was Bibi Khadija’s ؑ youngest daughter Bibi Fatimah ؑ who grew up to marry Hazrat Ali bin Abu Talib ؑ, the inheritor of Rasoolallah’s ﷺ spirituality. It was through Bibi Sayyedah ؑ that the progeny of Rasoolallah ﷺ continues.

12 Ways to Stay on Top of Stress

1. Exercise. Amen for endorphins. Believe me, they've helped me many days with my perspective. If you have to work out, then go take a brisk walk and get that blood flowing. It isn't about working out to lose weight -- it's about being healthy and staying sane.

2. Eat the real stuff. Crappy food (fast, processed, and loaded with sugar) doesn't help your chemical brain and body handle stress. Living food, real food, helps support your mind and body while it's trying to deal with the million things coming its way. Every time I reach for the chocolate, I'm looking to feel something from it. Don't get me wrong -- if it's just a little here and there because I enjoy the taste of it, great. But if I'm using it the minute I feel overwhelmed, then that's when that food is no longer OK to eat. It doesn't make the problem go away, and then I just feel bad about eating the food to pacify myself. Grab green food instead. Put things in your mouth that are going to support your immune function and keep you levelheaded.

3. Notice. Try not to let the stress overtake you. Recognize the situations that cause the stress and notice them coming your way. You have a better shot at fending off the full effects of the stress when you can anticipate it.

4. Get it off your chest. Talk to a friend or partner about the stress. Sometimes just getting it off your chest can help unload some of the burden.

5. Keep your sense of humor. If you do have the chance to talk about it, try to see the irony and humor in the wacky bits. I think someone is dead in the water once they lose their sense of humor.

6. Stay grateful. My daughter has large lungs and verbal skills she likes to display. Just when I start to wishfully think about her being quiet, I remind myself to be grateful that she can talk to me at all. In almost all of our problems are boatloads of blessings. "Oh, I don't feel like going to the gym." Well, Amen that you have the means and the health to even be able to wrestle with the idea of going to work out. Make a habit of saying thank you. You will notice the sunny spots a lot more often, and not just the gray skies and storms.

7. Ask, "What's the hurry?" Have some fun. We're always so busy going somewhere, we miss just enjoying the moment. If an opportunity comes your way to do something fun, take it.

8. Take a deep breath. When you feel the stress getting to you, take a moment. Get away, even if it's just for an hour, to be with yourself and your thoughts. Some people like to take a walk, meditate, lock themselves away in a beautiful bath, or go to church. Find the peace and the silence.

9. Keep it simple. Simplify where you can. Does Junior really need to be in 78 activities at the age of 5? Do you have to go to every little party or gathering you're invited to?

10. Turn of the TV. A lot of it is bad news anyway, and it robs us of hours that we could use to be getting other things done. Since everyone complains that they have no time, get some by unplugging from the tube.

11. Sleep. If you're rested, you have a better shot at handling things. Not to mention, you may not stress out as easily if you have a chance to recover at night.

12. Drink water. I have said it before: Americans consume 21 percent of their calories through liquid consumption. Hydrate with water. Help you entire system function better just by drinking enough water. Oh, and by the way, if you don't think that weight loss and proper hydration have a relationship, think again. Shift the paradigm on its side -- don't think about exercise and nutritional eating just as something you have to suffer through to get into those jeans. Instead, think of them as armor that will protect you in this crazy world, with all of the bazillion details you deal with every day.
